Sugar Cookies & Icing Recipes

CALLING ALL BAKERS!!!! Sooooo, if you know me, you know that I love to bake. Like, all of the time. Almost every single day I am in the kitchen baking something new!  I know that a classic winter time favorite is cut out sugar cookies, topped with a sweet, hardened icing. And now, I have some great news for y’all……… Wait for it…….. I have found THE PERFECT sugar cookie recipe!! It is seriously amazing! Soft and buttery. Thick and chewy. Everything that you could ever want in a cookie! For all of you who have been buying your cookies at the store, please, please, please, try this amazing recipe. They are SO much better than ANY store bought cookie you could ever buy! I promise you will love them. Just like my family did! They are very quick and easy. (It only takes me about 10 minutes to whip up a batch and start cutting them out.) You don’t have to wait for hours while they chill in the refrigerator. And they keep their shape perfectly when they are baking. Seriously. Just try them. You will thank me later. 🙂 Or maybe not, after you realize how yummy they are. I’m warning you right now, you will want to eat the whole pan! So here’s the recipe. Have fun baking!!

Perfect Sugar Cookie Recipe 

Yields 5-6 Dozen

2 Cups Sugar

4 Eggs

1/2 Cup Shortening

1/2 Cup (1 Stick) Butter

2 Tsp. Vanilla

1/2 Cup Milk

2 Tb. Baking Powder

6 Cups Flour

1 Tsp. Salt

Preheat oven to 350. Cover baking sheets in parchment paper.

Cream together sugar, shortening, and butter. (If you don’t have shortening, using all butter is fine.) Beat in eggs one at a time. Add vanilla and milk. Stir in your dry ingredients. Use enough flour that your dough will be thick and easy to handle. (At least 6 cups.) Put dough on floured surface. Pat or roll dough out until it is about 1/2 of an inch thick. Cut with cookie cutters and place on parchment paper covered baking sheets. Place in preheated oven and bake for 10 minutes. Check them at 8 minutes. You do NOT want them to brown. If they are browned at all, take them out immediately.(Unless you want burnt sugar crisps 🙂 ) They will be extremely soft. Let the cookies sit on the baking sheet for an additional 2-3 minutes. Then move them to cooling racks and let them cool completely. Ice the cookies with the icing recipe below.

Icing Recipe

2 Cups Powdered Sugar

4-8 Tb. Milk

1 Tsp. Vanilla

2-3 Drops Food Coloring (Optional)

This has been my family’s go to icing recipe for as long as I can remember. It’s so simple and easy. It literally takes seconds to throw together! If you want the icing to harden on the cookies, make sure that your icing is not too runny. It should be thick at first, but just keep stirring. Add the milk, drops at a time, until you get the right consistency. It should be thick, but still smooth and spreadable.
